Meet the artist

Hilary Adair is a painter and printmaker who makes drawings, watercolours, acrylic and oil paintings and original prints in a wide range of sizes and subjects.

She studied Painting at St.Martin’s School of Art and Printmaking at Brighton College of Art. After 5 years lecturing in art she moved to Greece and lived there for 11 years, having her first solo exhibition at the British Council in Athens. Since then she has exhibited widely and has work in many public and private collections. She was elected to the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers in 1987.

Hilary has lived in the West Somerset for many years and her surroundings have made a big impact on her work. Exmoor is a prominent theme evoking the unique colour and moods of the landscape and coastline so appreciated by Coleridge and Wordsworth.

She also has close ties with Greece, which with 2,000 islands is inseparable from the sea and this relationship between land and the sea prevails in her current work.

A group of watercolours and etchings join together the English and Greek connection in studies made of the Temple of Harmony, an 18thCentury folly in Somerset, once part of a large garden which contained an exquisite marble statue of Terpsichore, now housed in the Museum of Somerset in Taunton.
